Motion Sensor 101: What You Need to Know
Table of Contents
Your motion sensor is designed to detect movement based on heat changes in its field of view. It’s a key part of your home’s protection, and understanding how it works ensures you're getting the best performance.
Arm Modes & Motion Detection
- Arm Away – Motion detection is active. If movement is detected, the alarm will trigger.
- Arm Stay – Motion detection is inactive, so you can move freely at home without setting off the alarm.
Battery Saver: After detecting motion, your sensor goes into a 3-minute sleep mode to conserve battery life.
Best Practices: Where Not to Install Your Sensor
To avoid false triggers and ensure accurate detection, do not install your sensor:
- In direct sunlight
- Facing a window
- Near air vents with warm air
- Where pets gather or might jump onto furniture
- In humid areas where condensation may occur
- Near high shelves or furniture, small pets can climb
How to Enter Test Mode
Want to test the sensor’s motion detection?
- Remove the back cover of the sensor (use the clip inside the small hole on the bottom)
- Take out the battery
- Hold the tamper switch while re-inserting the battery
- Reassemble the sensor
In Test Mode: A red light will flash every time motion is detected, and the 3-minute sleep period will shorten to just 15 seconds.
Exit Test Mode
To return the sensor to normal operation:
Simply remove and reinsert the battery without holding the tamper switch.
Motion Sensor FAQs
- Pet-Friendly: Ignores pets under 25–45 lbs. (adjustable sensitivity inside the sensor)
-
Field of Vision:
- 90° side-to-side horizontal view
- Sees about 35–45 feet forward
- Detects motion downward at a 45° angle, but not upward
- Sleep Mode: After motion is detected, the sensor goes inactive for 3 minutes to save battery, even if unarmed.
