Door & Window Sensor Guide
Table of Contents
Protecting your home starts at the perimeter—and our Door & Window Sensors are designed to do just that with reliability and ease.
How It Works
Each sensor comes in two parts:
- The larger piece is the sensor that connects with your security panel.
- The smaller piece is a magnet that the sensor detects.
When the magnet and sensor are properly aligned, your panel will accurately show whether the door or window is open or closed. If they’re too far apart, the panel may not register their status correctly.
Where to Place Your Sensor (and Where Not To)
To ensure optimal performance:
Do place the sensor on:
- Doors and windows that open and close
- Surfaces where the sensor and magnet can sit within ¾ inch of each other
Avoid placing the sensor:
- On metal or aluminum surfaces (can disrupt readings)
- More than 1 inch apart
- On non-opening windows or doors
- Where the sensor gets direct sunlight (it may overheat and affect function)
Installing on Metal? No Problem
If you must install on a metal surface:
- Use the plastic spacer to offset the sensor from the metal (provided by Cove)
- Or use magnetic tape for mounting
Additional Tips & FAQs
- The same sensor type works for both doors and windows.
- Doors have a default 30-second entry delay—giving you time to disarm the system.
- When arming in Away Mode, a door must be opened during the exit countdown—if a window is triggered instead, the alarm will sound immediately.
