How It Works - Door/Window Sensor
Table of Contents
Each sensor has two parts:
- The larger piece is the sensor that talks to your panel
- The smaller piece is a magnet
When the magnet is close to the sensor, it knows your door or window is closed. If they’re too far apart, the panel may not detect "Open" or "Closed" correctly.
These sensors are typically used on doors and windows around the outside of your home. You’ll hear a chime or voice announcement anytime one is opened.
Installation Tips
To keep your sensors working their best, here’s what to avoid:
- Don’t place the sensor on metal or aluminum surfaces
- Keep the two pieces within ¾ inch of each other
- Avoid placing on doors or windows that don’t open
- Avoid direct sunlight on the larger sensor (especially on windows — it can cause overheating)
If you need to install on a metal surface:
- Use a Cove-provided spacer
- Or use magnetic tape for better mounting
Quick FAQs
- The same sensor works for both doors and windows
- Doors have a default 30-second entry delay
- When arming in “Away” mode, you must open a door during the countdown — if a window is triggered, the alarm will go off
